At 19, Maggie is cutting quite a swath in her first introduction to the higher society of St. Ogg. She is enjoying the good life-getting up in the morning when she wants and having no one pointing out all her deficiencies. She can play the piano at her leisure, and she is getting much attention from the young men. Philip had not come as expected-he had gone on a trip to the coast.
