Tulliver is angry at Mrs. Glegg about the 500 pounds he owes her, and decides that the only way he can repay her right away is by asking his sister's husband to pay him the $300 pounds he owes him. Gritty, Mrs. Moss, is Tulliver's only sister. Her husband is a poor farmer; they have eight children, and live miserably. She is glad to see her brother, and he is touched by the family's poverty. She wants to know when Maggie is coming to see her. She loves and admires Maggie, as do the children.
