Spokane, Washington

Alan wakes in a hospital in Spokane, Washington, at the beginning of the novel. Alan was attacked as he was leaving Spokane by three men. Alan finds himself forced to remain in Spokane until spring because he plans to walk mostly mountain roads so that he can see Yellowstone National Park. For this reason, Alan ends up moving in with Angel/Nicole, a woman he once helped change a flat tire, for nearly six months.

Idaho

While walking through Idaho, Alan meets a seventeen year old girl who was about to be raped by a group of men. Alan saves the girl and ends up allowing her to walk with him through all of Idaho and most of Montana.
