Tasiilaq, Greenland

Tasiilaq is the small coastal town in Greenland where the novel begins. Franny travels here to find and tag three Arctic terns, which she plans on following south. While in Tasiilaq she notices the Saghani docked at port, and decides to join their crew. After significant effort, she convinces the Saghani captain, Ennis Malone, to allow her aboard. Franny's mission to trace the terns' migration begins here.

Newfoundland, Canada

Newfoundland, Canada is where Saghani crew member, Samuel, is from. During a turbulent storm, Samuel is struck by a wire and killed; Franny and Anik revive him minutes later. Worried about his heart, the crew rushes to and docks in Newfoundland. While Samuel is hospitalized, they stay with Samuel's family.
