Summary

In Chapter 18, Beatrice explains to Ianthe why she cannot marry him. She would despise any man who took her magic away and so she must marry someone else. She makes Ianthe promise to teach Ysbeta to read the grimoires, since Beatrice’s family will certainly forbid her from seeing them. The Clayborns leave the ship.

Beatrice passes days with no callers in Chapter 19. She is lonely and depressed. One day, while reading the news, Nadi alerts her of a lucky advertisement. Beatrice goes to her father and begs him to buy shares of the business venture Nadi pointed out to her. He refuses to speak to her. Ianthe comes to offer Father 50,000 crowns if he allows Beatrice to remain single for another year. Father refuses and Ianthe leaves. The next day, Danton arrives. He is to marry Beatrice in three days’ time...
