Book 4, Go West, Young Man Summary
We next join up with the newly renamed Cal at a barbershop in Scranton. As the door to his storefront opens, the barber sees a tall, lanky teenager enter. The teenager is wearing a long, hippie hairstyle and a dark suit - a strange mix. The barber directs him to a chair and he asks to have his hair cut short.
Cal is scared. Cal has never been out on his own, never really had to handle money and had no idea how much things cost. Even though he left New York on a bus with a ticket as far as Scranton, Pennsylvania, he had not figured out anything past that. Before going to the barbershop, Cal has found the local Salvation Army and bought a dark suit, not really knowing how men's sizes work. By the time Ed at the barbershop is done, Cal is a new man.
