Book 3, Waxing Lyrical Summary

Since his break up with Julie, Cal is back to his old, solitary ways - lone walks, bottles of wine and cigars. The good thing is that it's fall, his favorite season. Now, flashback to another fall of 1973, Calliope is soon to turn fourteen and after church one Sunday her mother's friend Sophie Sassoon, a beauty shop owner, tells her that she sees a little mustache emerging. Based on her ethnic heritage, Calliope has been expecting this. Calliope has seen her mother, aunt, and cousin battle unwanted hair and now it's her turn, so she asks her mother to make an appointment for her with Sophie.

The family soon learns that Chapter 11 will be coming home for Christmas and bringing a girlfriend with him. When he finally arrives home, he is quite a different person from the nerd that left home the summer...
