From Athens, Desdemona and Lefty sail toward America. The couple plans to stage their courtship on the ship so that when they arrive in America they will be husband and wife. The two board the ship at different times and on her new Greek passport, Desdemona takes her mother's maiden name as her last name. On the first day at sea, they do not talk to one another, but remain separate and make friends with others on the ship. The siblings do not speak on the second day or third day either, however, as they had planned, Lefty passes by Desdemona standing alone at the rail and smiles and nods a greeting.
