Middlemarch

The story takes place mostly in and around the town of Middlemarch. Middlemarch comprises many estates, including Tipton Grange, Freshitt, Stone Court and Lowick. Other characters live within Middlemarch's town proper. The mayor of Middlemarch is Mr. Vincy.

Three vices are prevalent among the residents of Middlemarch: gambling, gossip and greed. Even Farebrother indulges in gambling. Likewise, Lydgate and Fred Vincy turn to the Green Dragon pool table when either down on their luck or rejoicing from a windfall. Whist, a gambling card game, also is played at nearly every gathering in Middlemarch.

Nearly everyone gossips freely, with the exception of Dorothea Brooke, who neither passes gossip nor believes negative news from others. The residents of Middlemarch adhere to a strict code of conduct and lifestyle. It is so important to keep up appearances that families such.....
