At the Bulstrode residence, Mr. Bulstrode asks his wife for her wishes concerning his final will. She implores him to leave Stone Court under Fred Vincy's care, as Mr. Garth has previously suggested. Bulstrode agrees, but sends his wife to convince Mr. Garth of the idea.
Mr. Garth looks for Mary. When he mentions Fred, Mary explains that she loves Fred, not for what he can do for her, but simply because she has always had romantic feelings for him. Her father then tells her about Fred's appointment as overseer of Stone Court and offers his blessings to her eventual marriage. Mary vows that her father is the best.....
