It seems to Will Ladislaw that he was always fated to return some day to Middlemarch, with nothing more than his resolve to keep him away. Rosamond assures Ladislaw that she cleared everything with Dorothea.
After talking to the Rosamond, Dorothea sleeps better than she has in some time. She then receives a visit from a Miss Noble, who brings a friend that fears he has offended Dorothea. That visitor is Will Ladislaw.
Ladislaw and Dorothea enjoy a tearful reunion. Will confesses that he refused to accept any money from Bulstrode. Sadly, they plan to depart. Just before Ladislaw leaves, Dorothea calls out to him. She renounces her need for Casaubon's money. She vows that they can live on her personal inheritance alone.
At the Chettam's home, politics take priority, since the national legislature has vetoed.....
