To help Rosamond's unknown illness, Lydgate gives her a mild sedative. Will returns later that day to visit Lydgate. Gossip grows, and now Ladislaw's reputation has suffered as well. Townspeople call Will the grandson of a swindler. The two men pity one another and the bad luck that has befallen them.
Dorothea dines with Farebrother, his mother and his aunt. When the women discuss how fond they are of Ladislaw, Dorothea becomes upset and excuses herself to go home. There, she weeps over her lost love. After a time of being upset, she calls for the butler to bring her a new bonnet, signaling an end to her mourning period. She leaves Lowick the following day with new resolve.
When Dorothea arrives to visit with Rosamond the second time, Rosamond is still ill in bed......
