Chapters 70-72 Summary

Bulstrode personally stays to watch Raffles. The next day, when Lydgate comes to check on the patient, he finds him worse. He leaves some opium, with strict instructions about its dosage. Reconsidering, Bulstrode agrees to loan Lydgate the money. He claims that he just needed time to consider it. Mrs. Bulstrode, also, had stuck up for Lydgate, wanting a better life for her niece, Rosamond.

After spending much of the night watching Raffles, Bulstrode gives care over to a maid, not telling her about the dosage for the opium. He also okays some brandy for the patient. Before morning, Raffles dies.

Not aware of the developments at Stone Court, Lydgate tells Farebrother that there are better days ahead. He plans to continue his business in town and take on an apprentice.
