Chapters 67-69 Summary

Lydgate continues to struggle under his financial burden. He decides to go to Bulstrode for a loan. When he arrives at the bank, Bulstrode confesses his own reasons for wanting a meeting with Lydgate. Due to his declining health, Bulstrode has decided to give over oversight of the hospital and leave Middlemarch. Lydgate secretly suspects that the real reason Bulstrode wants out of the hospital is due to the operational costs.

Bulstrode suggests Mrs. Casaubon as a new beneficiary of the hospital. He also suggests that they consider joining the hospital to the infirmary already established in town. When Lydgate finally gets around to asking for he load, Bulstrode quickly refuses. He suggests that Lydgate consider bankruptcy.

Raffles comes to visit Bulstrode again. Bulstrode makes a final offer to pay Raffles a yearly salary to.....
