Chapters 58-60 Summary
Sadly, Rosamond Lydgate loses her baby in chapter fifty-eight. In her first obvious moment of rebellion against her husband, she goes riding. When her horse is startled, she suffers an accident, followed by a miscarriage. She assumes that the miscarriage would have happened regardless, but Lydgate blames the horse ride nonetheless.
Lydgate now suffers even more pressing debts. He feels that he cannot share the burden with Rosamond, after the stress she suffered losing the baby. Much of the debt, however, has accrued from the trivial household items Rosamond needed.
Sometime later, Will Ladislaw stops by briefly, but Lydgate obviously does not want to entertain. Shortly after Ladislaw leaves, Lydgate tells Rosamond of their money problems. Rosamond confesses that she would rather leave Middlemarch penniless than suffer the humiliation of her friends knowing the truth.
