Chapters 55-57 Summary

Dorothea fulfills her promise to her sister to stay overnight at Freshitt. Celia implores Dorothea not to wear her mourning cap. In fact, Celia removes the cap from Dorothea's head. Chettam notices and takes it as a good sign. Ladies assembled at Freshitt discuss the proper length of mourning, agreeing more or less on one year, unless the woman remarries. Dorothea announces that she does not plan to remarry. She desires to help the poor. James Chettam finds such plans becoming for Dorothea, though, sadly, she is only twenty-one years old.

Caleb Garth and Dorothea plan together to improve life for the farmers on the lands Caleb manages. There was much disagreement throughout the countryside over the placement of a railway. All of residents want access to the railroad, but no one wants it.....
