Fred visits Farebrother at home and asks him to intercede for him to Mary Garth. He wants her reaction to his decision to pursue a career in the church. Farebrother promises to ask her.
Immediately, Farebrother takes the message to Mary. She vows that she would never marry a clergyman. She is quick to point out that she does not judge Farebrother personally. She just does not think she would like that lifestyle. She reinforces her opinion that is would be ridiculous for Fred to go into the church.
