Chapters 52-54 Summary

Farebrother and his family rejoice at his appointment to Lowick. The women discuss what this could mean for their family and their social lives. His aunt suggests that Farebrother may marry now.

Fred visits Farebrother at home and asks him to intercede for him to Mary Garth. He wants her reaction to his decision to pursue a career in the church. Farebrother promises to ask her.

Immediately, Farebrother takes the message to Mary. She vows that she would never marry a clergyman. She is quick to point out that she does not judge Farebrother personally. She just does not think she would like that lifestyle. She reinforces her opinion that is would be ridiculous for Fred to go into the church. Mary admits to herself that she has feelings beyond friendship for Fred, despite that.....
