Chapters 49-51 Summary

James Chettam and Mr. Brooke discuss Casaubon's will. Dorothea has moved in at Freshitt for the time being. The men want to keep certain aspects a secret until she seems to be in better spirits. Chettam feels a brotherly protection towards Dorothea and is very upset by Casaubon's final wishes, which forbid her to marry Will Ladislaw or she will forfeit her share of Casaubon's estate.

In an effort to lighten the topic, Brooke discusses his future in politics feeling that his chances at success are good.

Dorothea resides at Freshitt for one week, watching Celia tend to her new baby boy. Wanting to find out what Casaubon's last request was, she asks to visit Lowick to get some papers. At first, Chettam resists, but Lydgate endorses the idea, saying that stopping the visit will.....
