Chapters 46-48 Summary

This chapter finds Brooke and Ladislaw discussing Brooke's political campaign. Brooke claims that his platform does not endorse the Reform Bill. Ladislaw points out that Brooke should take whichever position is popular, thereby getting him elected. They practice a political speech that Will has written. Will Ladislaw's motivation in working for Brooke is that eventually a life in politics would move Ladislaw up the social ladder.

Ladislaw spends some time that evening at Farebrother's. Gossip about Casaubon's feelings towards his cousin, Ladislaw, has spread.

In a visit to Lydgate's, Ladislaw becomes friends with Lydgate, though Lydgate admits that he will not support Brooke. Rosamond asks the men not to discuss politics, as they already disagree on money and medicine. After Ladislaw leaves, Lydgate admits to himself that creditors are a problem. He does not share.....
