Chapters 43-45 Summary

Chapter 43 opens "Book five, Dead Hand."The following day, Dorothea seeks out Lydgate. She first calls at his home and only finds Rosamond and Will Ladislaw. She bids a short goodbye and seeks Lydgate at the new hospital. Noticing Ladislaw's reaction to Dorothea, Rosamond questions the attraction. Will confesses that he finds Dorothea to be a perfect woman. Rosamond wonders if she should be jealous of Lydgate meeting with Dorothea.

When Lydgate returns, Rosamond questions him about Dorothea's visit. She shares Ladislaw's attraction to Dorothea. Lydgate does not readily indulge in gossip, but he announces that Dorothea means to give an annual gift to the new hospital.

In her visit with Lydgate, Dorothea learns that Casaubon only suffers from anxiety about his condition. Lydgate does, however share that the hospital suffers from lack of proper.....
