Chapters 40-42 Summary

The author once again writes about the Garth family in chapter 40. Mary has returned home and waits for a new job. They are just opening the mail. Mary expresses desire to accept a position in an all girls school, which Fred declares to be very dull. He is making fun of Mary's future students when Mr. Garth opens his own letters. He reads invitations to supervise estates for Brooke and Chettam. After some celebrating by the whole family, Mr. Garth instructs Mary not to respond to the girls school. They decide the expected income is sufficient for the entire family, and will even give the boys a decent education. Mr. Garth says that he expects such good fortune to breed more employment in the future.

When Farebrother visits, Garth excitedly shares the news......
