Chapters 34-36 Summary

Chapter 34 opens "Book four: Three Love Problems."

Featherstone dies on a dreary May day. He used his power and money to try to manipulate people up until the very end. The family went to the funeral service at the cemetery in Lowick. Some locals watch the proceedings from Lowick manor. Celia, Mrs. Cadwallader and Lady Chettam comment on the motivations of Featherstone's relatives.

Mr. Brooke comes into the room where the ladies and Mr. Casaubon watch. He reports the Casaubon is working against the doctor's orders. He explains to the women that Vincy, who is at the funeral, is the mayor of Middlemarch. Will Ladislaw arrives bearing the portrait done of the Casaubons in Rome. He had come to Lowick with Mr. Brooke.
