Chapters 31-33 Summary

When Lydgate next visits Rosamond, he mentions his recent visit to Lowick. Rosamond, hearing much praise for Dorothea, feels a little jealous of the time the Lydgate has spent there. The gossip mills of Middlemarch spend some time discussing Rosamond Vincy, citing that she is much too uppity. They also gossip that Rosamond and Lydgate are secretly engaged. The ladies that gossip about Rosamond soon visit at her home. They urge marriage. Rosamond has many romantic notions of marriage and does long for it.

Mrs. Bulstrode, however, urges her husband to ask Lydgate to stay away from Rosamond. Mrs. Bulstrode feels that Lydgate does not have a high enough social standing to marry into Rosamond's family.

The message makes it to Lydgate, who tries to avoid Rosamond. He tells Farebrother that he will not be.....
