Chapters 28-30 Summary
The Casaubons return home from their honeymoon in Rome. Dorothea receives Celia and Mr. Brooke with joy when they visit Lowick Manor. When Celia asks how Rome was, Dorothea expresses little joy in the trip. Both Celia and Mr. Brooke comment that Dorothea looks somewhat pale. They conclude that being home will cure what ails her.
Dorothea notices a new attitude in Celia, who becomes apologetic when questioned. She confesses that, with no other companion, she has spent a lot of time with Sir James and became engaged. Showing some maturity, however, Celia says they will wait to be married, as they have all their lives for marriage and only a little while to enjoy engagement.
Dorothea rejoices with her sister. Celia enjoys the congratulatory spirit, relieved that her sister has not become too educated to appreciate such things.
