Chapters 19-21 Summary

Chapter 19 takes the reader to Rome, where Dorothea and Edward Casaubon are on their honeymoon. A young man sees Dorothea admiring some art. Struck by her beauty, he runs to get a friend so that he might share the sight. The friend, Will Ladislaw, recognizes the woman as his cousin's wife. He admits this to his friend.

Excited, Naumann, Will's friend, implores that Will to gain permission for Naumann to paint Dorothea. At first, Will resists such an arrangement. After much bargaining on the subject, Will relents.

The first scene of Dorothea in Rome shows her crying, alone. She feels left out of her new husband's life. She wishes that she could be more help. The research takes a toll on Edward. Dorothea desires to lessen the burden on him. Life married to such.....
