Island

The story takes place on an unnamed island. The island has one town, and the Memory Police rule over the town. The Memory Police appear determined to exercise total control over the island’s population. They pursue this goal by killing dissidents, destroying all items that they deem inimical, and erasing people’s memories of those materials. The islanders are mostly docile and obedient, as they do not have any ready means of resistance, and they do not miss things that they cannot remember. However, some islanders have the ability to remember erased things.

The narrator lives in a house on the island. It is the house where she grew up and was raised by her parents. As an adult, she still lives I the house, since her parents are both deceased. She works as a novelist, and she does all of her writing in the house...
