Benson

Benson is one of the novel’s two protagonists and point-of-view characters. He lives in Houston, Texas. He is Black and homosexual. He appears to be in his early 20s, although his exact age is never stated. He was diagnosed with HIV a few years ago, and his parents forced him to move out of the house after his diagnosis. He is saddened and angered by the fact that his parents often try to deny his homosexuality. Benson works at a daycare center and has a good rapport with the young children.
