Chapter 31 Summary

Sayuri prepares herself for her next meeting with the minister and Nobu with the hope that the Chairman will also be present. The chances of any of the men attending, or Mameha, who has been out of town, seem slight, as when the day arrives it is icy cold, affecting communication systems and train lines.

When Sayuri arrives at the Ichiriki teahouse she finds it in a state of chaos, the maids are cleaning up after a water pipe has burst and have little time to do anything else. Sayuri's hopes sink but to her surprise, she finds the Chairman alone in the designated meeting room.
