Chapter 26 Summary

The ceremony joining the General and Sayuri together as danna and geisha takes place in the Ichiriki teahouse and is similar to the mizuage and older sister ceremonies. Afterwards the General takes her to a seedy inn and instructs her how to please him. Instead of feeling the terror she felt during her mizuage she merely feels queasy, a queasiness that is present each time they meet. Sayuri wonders if all physical contact with men is unpleasant and speculates what it would be like with the Chairman. She finds her answer through a brief yet intimate affair with a man named Yasuda Akira through whom she realizes that physical relationships with a man can be pleasurable.

The appointment of the General as Sayuri's danna does not have a big impact on her life. Unlike other danna of the time, he doesn't indulge Sayuri with treats or take her to lavish...
