Chapter 25 Summary

Sayuri spends the next two years after her mizuage ceremony attending parties and learning the ways of a geisha. Mameha still has an interest in her future and does her utmost to make sure that Sayuri is recognized and well thought of in Gion. In the summer of 1938, Sayuri makes the transition from apprentice geisha to a proper geisha. Instead of wearing the patterned collars associated with apprentice geisha she now wears the white collar emblematic of geisha and the less elaborate yet womanlier kimono traditionally worn by geisha.

Sayuri is surprised to learn that she is to have a danna, eighteen being very young to have a danna. She learns that Nobu has proposed to be her danna. The news makes her heart sink, as her destiny becomes clear to her with.....
