Chapter 23 Summary

Sayuri doesn't have time to reflect on the events in Hakone. As her train pulls into Kyoto, she sees the posters advertising the "Dances of the Old Capital," and she is reminded of their imminent approach. To her surprise the artist, Uchida Kosaburo, has used Sayuri's image in the posters to advertise the dances, something that makes her less, not more popular with the other geisha. Mameha is proud that Sayuri is in the posters and seems even more devoted to making Sayuri successful. The incident with the Baron is never mentioned between them and their focus becomes the dance.

Sayuri is excited at being in her first dance. Her first appearance on stage with other geisha as a ray of sunlight goes well and she is pleased to discover the Chairman and Nobu.....
