Sayuri travels to the cherry blossom ceremony in Hakone by train with Mr. Itchoda. The journey is painful for Sayuri bringing back memories of her train journey to Kyoto with Satsu, making her grieve her past. Sayuri contemplates how much her life has changed and realizes how sheltered her life has been.
The Baron is pleased to see her making her welcome and instructing her to mingle with the guests and make herself known. Geisha from Kyoto are unique in their appearance and deportment so Sayuri is a major attraction.
To her delight, Sayuri encounters the Chairman in the Baron's house he recognizes her and engages her in conversation. He has a present for the Baron and asks Sayuri what she thinks of it, she tells the Chairman that it is lovely, but he isn't.....
