Chapter 21 Summary

An exciting opportunity arises for Sayuri to entertain Nobu and Dr. Crab at the same engagement. The Baron is having a party and Mameha is convinced she can persuade him to invite both men. She explains to Sayuri that the task of letting both men know that she is interested in them while making the other man jealous is a subtle skill but she is certain that Sayuri can manage it.

Everything goes according to plan with both men attending the party and Mameha and Sayuri arriving later in the afternoon. The Baron's home is impressive with the tea ceremony taking place on a boat in the middle of a lake. After the tea ceremony, the guests walk in the extensive gardens until they reach a wooden platform where sake is to be taken......
