Chapter 20 Summary

Sayuri sees the world in a new light after her conversation with Mameha about mizuage. She realizes Dr. Crab's true intentions in patronizing the teahouses of Gion and views him in a different light too. Recognizing that her success depends on her mizuage, Sayuri lies awake one night waiting for Pumpkin and Hatsumomo to return and the opportunity to question Pumpkin.

The opportunity to question Pumpkin arises that night. They return to the Okiya late at night with Hatsumomo in one of her more awkward moods. Hatsumomo demands that Pumpkin stay up and read to her while they drink beer even though Pumpkin is tired. Hatsumomo then demands that Pumpkin fetch her some noodles despite the late hour and Sayuri seizes the opportunity to slip out and follow Pumpkin in order to question her......
