Chapter 19 Summary

Sayuri is excited by the fact that her prospects are improving and goes to bed each night dreaming of the future with the Chairman's handkerchief wrapped in her hand. Despite her excitement and improved prospects, none of the men makes contact with her or Mameha for several weeks. One day her presence is requested at the Ichiriki Teahouse by the Iwamura Electric Company.

Sayuri takes great care in her appearance, helped by Auntie and surprisingly Hatsumomo, who as predicted thinks Sayuri's relationship with Nobu is amusing. Her first engagement at the teahouse with Nobu doesn't go well, as she sits too near to him, irritating him and causing him to move away. She is worried that this will jeopardize her future relationship with him but this is not the case and her presence is.....
