Chapter 17 Summary

Sayuri is unable to concentrate on anything other than the fact that the Chairman is sitting next to her. The stadium around her appears to melt into the background with the Chairman being her sole focus. She tries hard to concentrate on Nobu and what he is saying to her but the Chairman's presence is burning her consciousness. Sayuri is woken from her reverie when she realizes she has been trying to pour an empty teapot. She feels foolish in doing so and, as a result, renews her efforts to listen to Nobu, who is patiently explaining the rules of Sumo to her.

During the match, she is distracted by the flash of an orange kimono in the corner of her eye. She is horrified to discover that Hatsumomo is sitting in the audience where Korin had been previously. Mameha and Sayuri make excuses to leave the stadium then discuss...
