Chapter 16 Summary

Sayuri is concerned to learn from Mameha that Pumpkin has been awarded the "Apprentice Geisha of the Month," award for the second time. Hatsumomo has been pushing Pumpkin to work hard and she is starting to look ill as a result. Sayuri is pleased that her friend has achieved such a prestigious award but worried about the consequences for her. Mameha isn't concerned about this award and explains that the award is based on how much the apprentice geisha earns. Hatsumomo has cleverly ensured that Pumpkin has earned a lot of money but it is detrimental to her reputation, Hatsumomo is cutting corners in making money and not staying at engagements for an acceptable amount of time, choosing to fit more engagements into her schedule rather than devoting time to a few.
