Chapter 14 Summary

The week leading up to Chiyo's induction ceremony is hectic. Her first important appointment is at the hairdresser's, where her hair is washed, oiled, waxed and then styled in the split peach hairstyle. This hairstyle is symbolic of a novice geisha. Sleeping with her hair in this style proves to be problematic despite using the tall cradle-like pillows to prevent the hair from being flattened. Chiyo makes many return journeys to the hairdresser to have her hair reset, a painful and time-consuming experience.

During the afternoons of the week preceding the ceremony, Auntie helps Chiyo to dress as a novice geisha and practice walking in the full costume. The costume is heavy with an extravagant obi and a kimono with long, flowing sleeves. Practicing walking in the costume tires Chiyo but it is essential.....
