Chapter 12 Summary

Mameha summons Chiyo to her apartment again and demands to know what had happened the day before after she had left the Okiya. Chiyo relays the conversation that Hatsumomo and Mrs. Nitta had, and asks Mameha why Mrs. Nitta would want Chiyo to fail as a geisha. Mameha explains that she has a bet with Mrs. Nitta and if Mameha wins, Mrs. Nitta will owe a lot of money. Mameha informs Chiyo that she has very strict rules as an older sister that must be followed at all costs. If Chiyo is disobedient or lazy or fails to follow Mameha's rules in any way, then Mameha will cease being her older sister and Chiyo will have to fend for herself. Mameha explains that she has been an older sister to apprentice geisha before.....
