Chapter 10 Summary

Several months have passed with no change in Chiyo's life as a maid until the unexpected death of Granny in early September. Granny's heater electrocutes her, killing her instantly. Life in the Okiya becomes disrupted. Granny's death is a significant occasion with many geisha passing through the Okiya to pay their final respects to Granny, honoring Mother and Hatsumomo in doing so. Chiyo's role during the visits is to take visitors' shoes, then return them to them when their visit is finished. She is horrified one day to recognize Mameha, the geisha whose robe she destroyed nearly two years earlier. Chiyo bows her head hoping to go unnoticed but Mameha insists that she look at her. Mameha is struck by Chiyo's beautiful eyes and after asking her maid what color she thinks they.....
