Chapter 9 Summary
The narrative in Chapter 9 skips to the future to a time just after Chiyo's sixty -fifth birthday. She recalls an article that was sent to her by a friend in which she is named as one of the greatest geisha of Gion. Parts of the article are incorrect, such as the claim that Chiyo was born in Kyoto and Chiyo even disputes if she was one of the greatest geisha. She reminds us of the earlier narrative of her twelve-year-old self then resumes the tale of how she became a geisha.
The months following her devastating news about her parents pass in a meaningless blur until one day she wakes up from a dream that has a profound effect on her. During the day after the dream, she is unable to shake its memory and becomes immersed in thought about her life. She realizes that her life has changed...
