Chiyo's revelation about Hatsumomo's lover makes the atmosphere the next day tense. Everyone is suffering because of Hatsumomo's scheming and Chiyo's revelation. The maids have been denied dried fish for six weeks and Chiyo is now forbidden to leave the house at all. Pumpkin watches the door at night with the door locked at all times.
