Chapter 8 Summary

Chiyo's revelation about Hatsumomo's lover makes the atmosphere the next day tense. Everyone is suffering because of Hatsumomo's scheming and Chiyo's revelation. The maids have been denied dried fish for six weeks and Chiyo is now forbidden to leave the house at all. Pumpkin watches the door at night with the door locked at all times. Chiyo is distressed as she can see no way of escaping and knows that she will now never be able to meet Satsu on Tuesday night. One day while she is cleaning the water runs away from her in the wrong direction as if it's running towards the ceiling and Chiyo has the idea of escaping via the roof.
