Chapter 7 Summary

Chiyo begins her punishment for ruining the kimono. Part of her punishment is to be confined to the Okiya and no longer run errands; this means that despite knowing where Satsu is, she is unable to go and search for her. She asks Auntie what a jorou-ya is but receives a vague answer. She seeks revenge for her punishment by mixing pigeon droppings into Hatsumomo's face cream, wiping the toilet brush on Granny's kimono and littering the kitchen with mouse droppings, actions that cannot be traced back to her.

One night Yoko receives a message from Hatsumomo requesting her shamisen; she has lost a bet and needs to play. Yoko is unable to take the shamisen and tells Chiyo that she will have to take it, being unaware that Chiyo isn't allowed to leave.....
