Chapter 6 Summary

Chiyo begins her life as a geisha in training. As the youngest and most recent addition to the Okiya, it is her role to wait at night for Hatsumomo to return from her appointments. Chiyo is to help her with any tasks she needs doing, such as removing her socks or preparing a snack for her. Hatsumomo often returns extremely late at night and Chiyo finds it difficult to remain awake.

Chiyo learns through waiting at night for Hatsumomo that she has a boyfriend who visits her in secret once a week at the Okiya. Yoko, a worker in the Nitta Okiya, sends coded messages to Hatsumomo to let her know when her boyfriend has arrived at the Okiya.
