Chapter 3 Summary

Chiyo's mother's illness becomes worse and Chiyo realizes for the first time that her mother might not live much longer. The thought of this saddens Chiyo and makes her worry about her future. The hope that Mr. Tanaka will adopt her and Satsu is the only thing that gives Chiyo courage and she dreams about it constantly.

The day arrives when Mr. Tanaka's assistant arrives at their house to take them away. Chiyo believes that Tanaka is finally adopting them and is pleased by the prospect. They arrive at the train station and find Mrs. Fidget and another man, Mr. Bekku. It becomes clear that Tanaka isn't going to adopt them and Mrs. Fidget speaks roughly to them. They are made to board the train with Mr. Bekku and leave. Chiyo believes that Tanaka.....
