Summary

Later in the afternoon, Hatsumomo takes Chiyo to the Registry Office where she is registered officially as a geisha in training. Awajiumi opens his account book and takes down Chiyo’s name and town of birth. Chiyo asks him about Satsu, but he assures Chiyo that there is no one by that name who had registered before her. When they return to the okiya, Auntie takes her to the bathhouse and helps her to bathe. Then Chiyo is given her first lesson in how to apply geisha makeup by observing Hatsumomo as she applies hers. Chiyo watches carefully. Then, she follows Hatsumomo to Mr. Bekku who is the official dresser. By the time she is finished, she is so beautiful even Auntie sighs.

Everyone is sound asleep but Chiyo later that night when a man enters asking for Yoko. Yoko monitors the telephone...
