Summary

Chiyo and Satsu return home the next day. While Satsu works in the village, Mrs. Sugi helps Chiyu bathe her mother. A few weeks later, Mr. Sugi catches up with Chiyo on her way home and tells her that Mr. Tanaka wants her and Satsu to come down to the village as soon as possible. Chiyo tells her father, and Satsu takes off her apron and leaves without a word. Her father nods, and Chiyo hurries to catch up with her sister. Mr. Tanaka is unusually cold, and tells the girls to ride in the back while he and Mr. Sugi ride in front. Satsu says nothing as they travel to Senzuru, but this time the wagon stops near the train tracks where Mrs. Fidget is waiting with a man named Mr. Bekku. Mrs. Fidget takes them to one side and hitting them...
