Chapter 2 Summary

Chiyo's story continues with Chiyo swimming in a local pond to take her mind off her problems. Her sister Satsu also goes swimming, but leaves earlier than Chiyo with the son of Sugi. Chiyo follows her sister and is confused to see her with her dress above her head and the boy fondling her breasts. As a nine-year-old, Chiyo is confused but aware that she doesn't want her sister to know that she has seen her. Chiyo hides naked by the side of the road and Mr. Tanaka discovers her. Tanaka disturbs her sister and the boy, who runs away. He has some herbs for Chiyo's mother that he says will help her to get better. Mr. Tanaka tells Chiyo about his upbringing, informing her that he was adopted; he draws a comparison.....
