Chapter 1 Summary

The novel begins with the reader being addressed directly by the narrator. The narrator is a geisha known as Sayuri. Sayuri narrates the story of her life. She explains that she wasn't always a geisha and proceeds to narrate the story of her childhood.

Sayuri was known by the name Chiyo as a child. She describes the house and the village where she grew up. The setting for this chapter is Yoroido, a small fishing village in Japan. Chiyo describes her parents and illustrates the differences between them. She describes her appearance and likens herself to her mother, both having unusual grey eyes. Chiyo has an older sister Satsu, who is portrayed as being clumsy. Chiyo's family history is described and we learn that her father was married previously, but his first wife and.....
