Sydney begins the novel by punching her roommate, Tori, once she finds out that she and Sydney’s boyfriend, Hunter, have been sleeping together for months behind her back. Sydney grabs all of her belongings from the apartment and leaves alone before realizing that she has forgotten several important items from the apartment. When it begins to rain, a girl named Bridgette invites Sydney into her apartment at Ridge’s request. Ridge is the mysterious boy Sydney often sees playing guitar on his balcony. She has thought about her attraction to him numerous times and often sings along to his songs, creating her own lyrics.

The perspective switches to Ridge’s, also jumping back a few days to before Sydney discovers Hunter’s cheating, while he is spending time with his girlfriend, Maggie. They kiss in his bed while Ridge thinks about the girl he sees all the time from his balcony, Sydney. Later, Ridge and Sydney hold up notes from their balconies and he asks her to write some lyrics for him.

Back in the present, Sydney is living temporarily in Ridge’s apartment with his two roommates, Warren and Bridgette. Sydney and Ridge begin to develop feelings for each other through their songwriting. Ridge reveals to Sydney that he is deaf, and so he lays his head on her chest or other parts of her body to hear the vibrations she makes when she sings. While they are working together, Sydney receives text messages from her ex-boyfriend looking to reconcile. She refuses. Sydney is upset when she learns that Ridge is dating Maggie, but she is committed to never come between them in their relationship. Ridge kisses Maggie one afternoon while they are writing and Sydney is initially excited until she realizes that she and Ridge are cheating on Maggie. She is devastated that she broke her promise to herself to never be like Tori. Ridge leaves Sydney alone.

Maggie begins to notice how Ridge and Sydney act around each other, but she trusts her boyfriend more than anybody else, so she does not share her suspicions. She stays for the weekend and she and Sydney bond. Ridge asks Sydney to move out of the apartment because he is finding it too difficult to keep their relationship platonic. She agrees.

Maggie discovers from reading the text messages on Ridge’s phone that he and Sydney kissed and have romantic feelings for each other. She is upset and leaves the apartment while Ridge begs her to forgive him.

Sydney moves into another apartment. Ridge goes to Maggie to beg her to reconsider getting back together, but she tells him that they need to follow their own separate paths. Ridge realizes that he should really be with Sydney. He plans to play the song they wrote together at his band’s show and hope that she realizes how he feels. Sydney hears the song and knows that she also wants to be with Ridge. They go back to her apartment and declare their love for each other.
