Chapter 38 finds Maurice waking after his first restful sleep in a long time. Scudder is still there, but preparing to leave. Maurice does not want Scudder to leave, but Scudder is afraid he will get into trouble from his supervisor if he does not leave. Maurice is alone in the beginning of chapter 39 when a servant brings him his breakfast. Maurice begins to let reality intrude on his happiness as he begins to wonder if the servant wonders why Maurice's door was locked. Maurice then begins to think of what others would think if they knew what he had been doing the night before. As Maurice begins to prepare for the day's cricket match, he worries that Scudder might say something to someone, ruining Maurice's reputation and possibly sending.....
