Blix’s tumor is a symbol of fate. Blix does not want medical treatment for her disease. She does not want to be poisoned or cut open with the belief that these acts will make her better. She believes if she cannot get rid of the tumor naturally, then it was intended for her to die as a result of the disease.

This Welsh Rarebit is a symbol of the socio-economic differences between Noah and Marnie. Noah is a member of a wealthy family that is familiar with unusual and exotic cuisine. Marnie has never heard of Welsh Rarebit before and refuses to eat it because she believes it is made of rabbit.
